As an InterNACHI® Infrared Certified® Thermography Inspector at Lorsung Home Inspections, I'm often sought after when homeowners spot water stains on their ceilings and need help identifying the source. While thermal imaging can confirm the presence of water in ceilings, its efficacy is heightened when combined with a high-quality moisture meter. During investigations, I might venture into the attic above the ceiling to check for signs of roof leaks, HVAC duct condensation, or pipe issues. However, relying solely on the camera may not always provide a complete solution. The camera provides clues that, when integrated with other data, aid in unraveling the root cause of the issue.

It's crucial to recognize that a thermal imaging camera isn't a magical fix; rather, it's an additional tool in my toolkit. To wield it effectively, I've undergone comprehensive training and certification from InterNACHI®, equipping me with an understanding of its mechanics and optimal usage.

My training also delves into building science, covering concepts like hydrodynamics and thermodynamics that illuminate the movement of water and heat. Armed with this knowledge, I grasp the physics underpinning thermal imaging, the technology itself, the fundamentals of building science, and how to leverage thermal imaging for various scenarios.

Thermal (infrared) imaging hinges on detecting temperature variations in objects. It entails deploying devices sensitive to infrared radiation to assess a building's envelope, unveiling thermal patterns that expose energy loss, hidden moisture, electrical anomalies, or structural intricacies.

Contrary to mere shapes and colors, my infrared camera allows me to visualize heat disparities. Nonetheless, effective use of thermal imaging necessitates not just owning the camera, but also possessing the capabilities to handle it accurately and interpret its visual output. Remember, owning a trowel doesn't make you a mason, and owning an infrared camera doesn't automatically qualify you as a proficient thermographer.
